Basil Baccouche, M.D., is a writer and physician.

Born and raised in Michigan, Basil Baccouche received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College, his master’s from the University of Cambridge, and his medical doctorate from Stanford Medical School in Palo Alto, where his first book, The End of Death, was written. He is currently a resident physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

To write The End of Death, Baccouche spent five years performing 261 interviews and examining thousands of never-before-seen archival documents on the enigmatic surgeon Norman Shumway, his project to transplant a human heart, and the emergence of the phenomenon known as brain death.

He lives in Massachusetts with his family.
